Immediate action needed from NDP as B.C. overdose deaths continue to climb

 

Today’s updated illicit drug overdose report, released by the Coroners Service, demonstrates a continued trend of record-breaking overdose deaths in British Columbia – with 2021 trending to be the deadliest year on record in the ongoing tragedy of B.C.’s opioid crisis.

“My condolences go out to the 158 families who mourned the loss of loved ones last month. The recent fifth anniversary of the overdose crisis being declared a public emergency demonstrates just how much work there needs to be done to urgently save lives as overdose deaths continue to rise,” said Trevor Halford, BC Liberal Critic for Mental Health and Addictions.

“More than just supplementing programs to keep people alive, this NDP government needs to take action to help people right now. Instead, the NDP is inexplicably spending less on support this year compared to the next three fiscal years.

Sons, brothers, aunts and so many others across B.C. can’t afford for John Horgan and the NDP to wait any longer. It’s time for this government to ensure they have access to the appropriate care and supports needed today.”


B.C. recorded an average of 5.1 deaths per day in March 2021, on par with the number of deaths documented in February 2021 – continuing the deadly trend of record-breaking months this year.

KRUGELL: BC NDP turns its attention from BC United to BC Conservatives

The BC NDP turning its attention, from BC United, to BC Conservatives was reported over the weekend from a variety of sources. It is the result of the surge in the BC Conservative's polling numbers and the subsequent collapse of BC United. The NDP has largely ignored the BC Conservatives, instead they opt to talk about issues directly or attack their old foes BC United. Practical politics says that parties closer to the centre tend to ultimately prevail over the long haul. They do wane but often make comebacks. A good example is the federal Liberals going from third party to government in 2015. Centrism has a lot of appeal on voting day. It is with regards to the impending closure of the Eljen Medical Clinic in Dawson Creek.   Dear Minister,   I am writing to you today with a critical concern regarding the imminent closure of the Eljen Medical Clinic, a vital healthcare facility in our community. The closure, scheduled for the summer of 2024, is a result of the utterly burdensome terms and conditions imposed by the bureaucratic Northern Health. As a result, Dawson Creek stands to lose four doctors who have made this city their home, and who wish to continue serving the people of our community.   The impending closure of the Eljen Medical Clinic is a significant blow to our city. Not only will it result in the loss of highly qualified and dedicated healthcare professionals, but it will also deprive thousands of Dawson Creek residents of access to their primary physicians.
