The Official Opposition Conservative Party of British Columbia is sounding the alarm over the NDP government’s failure to safeguard the province’s mineral exploration sector, which is a critical driver of jobs and economic growth for communities across BC. Immediate action is required to establish a clear, fair process for the staking of mineral claims or risk further undermining this vital industry.
“The NDP government’s inaction and mishandling of the Mineral Tenure Act (MTA) and Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) consultations have brought us to the brink of disaster,” said Pete Davis, Official Opposition Critic for Mining, Critical Minerals, and the Columbia Treaty, and MLA for Kootenay-Rockies.
“They’ve dragged their feet for over a year, failed to challenge critical court rulings, and now face the possibility of a moratorium on staking if a process isn’t in place by March 26, 2025. This would be a death blow to small prospectors and consultants, the backbone of BC’s mining sector.”
The NDP government initially attempted to align the MTA with DRIPA, a move that would have created significant uncertainty and over-regulation for an already burdened industry. After persistent industry push-back, the government was forced to separate the two. Efforts to align them have restarted and legislation is expected in 2026—potentially jeopardizing the future of mining in British Columbia.
“A mineral claim is not a mine. It’s essential to have a process that ensures meaningful consultation while recognizing that staking claims is an early-stage, low-impact activity,” said Scott McInnis, Official Opposition Critic for Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, and MLA for Columbia River-Revelstoke.
“Consultation should focus on collaboration and efficiency, not creating unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles. The NDP’s approach risks alienating both Indigenous communities and industry players, while failing to deliver meaningful progress.”
The Conservative Party of BC is urging the government to:
- Develop a clear and equitable process for staking mineral claims by March 26, 2025, ensuring small prospectors and consultants are not disproportionately burdened.
- Cease efforts to align the Mineral Tenure Act with DRIPA in a manner that stifles economic activity, and instead promote meaningful and streamlined consultation with Indigenous nations.
- Foster collaboration between industry and Indigenous communities, focusing on practical solutions that respect land rights while supporting economic development.
- Ensure land remains available for responsible exploration and development, avoiding heavy-handed restrictions that could harm BC’s competitive edge.
“The NDP government’s failure to stand up for
BC’s mineral exploration sector and its workers is reckless,” added MLA
Davis. “British Columbia has the potential to be a global leader in
critical minerals and sustainable mining practices,
but not if the NDP continues down this path. We need a government that
understands the importance of this sector and the thousands of families
that rely on it.”
The Conservative Party of BC stands committed
to working with Indigenous communities, industry stakeholders, and all
British Columbians to protect the mining sector and ensure its long-term
viability. The clock is ticking, and the
government must act before it’s too late.
