FELDSTED: We have a history of carrying more than our fair share and swinging well above our weight, but fiscal constraints are putting those abilities at risk
Any good things Donald Trump brings to the world are unintentional. But there could be one for Canada. He’s the best argument for a truly national economy, that levels internal trade barriers, and freely enables export of resources to Asia and Europe. This was overdue a decade ago. Now, it’s imperative.

Canada
has a wealth of undeveloped and under-developed natural resources all over the
country. We have electricity, grains, oil, minerals, timber and uranium galore.
We have the resources, but are not taking advantage of them.
Worse, we
are not building primary and secondary processing infrastructure that would add
thousands of jobs, allow us to sell products at increased prices and enhance
our economy.
We could
become an economic powerhouse able to afford improved social services.
Instead, we
have pretended to be compassionate and caring while sinking ourselves into debt
to provide social services we cannot afford
If Donald
Trump has managed to awaken our leaders to the fragility of our dependence on
the USA, it is an accomplishment of note.
With a strong
and healthy economy, we can afford a rightful place in NATO, and improve our
NAFTA bargaining position. We have a history of
carrying more than our fair share and swinging well above our weight, but
fiscal constraints are putting those abilities at risk.
Our
choice is stark – either we defend our national interests, and create an
independent Canadian economy, or become economic slaves to the US.
Trump has
made that clear.
