Indeed, it’s been nearly 25 years since the two wrote that line, and it’s still true today. But it isn’t just true of a larger-than-life figure such as the 15th prime minister. Whether it’s his socks, his propensity for taking selfies or his willingness to apologize for historical wrongdoing, there are a lot of things about Justin Trudeau that annoy Canadian conservatives. But the one that makes them genuinely angry is his faith in Canada’s “post-national” identity that exchanges things like historical monuments and reverence for long-dead prime ministers with a commitment to diversity and a set of shared values. As I mentioned in a post yesterday, the Province newspaper ran a story with regards to the upcoming Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention. In the piece written by Mike Smyth he stated: British Columbia’s mayors and councillors will gather once again this fall at the annual Union of B.C. Municipalities convention. And, when they do, they will once again be wined and dined at a fancy reception put on by the People’s Republic of China. Meanwhile, as municipal politicians mingle with Chinese power players, the UBCM will be cashing a cheque from the Chinese consulate in Vancouver. The root word of conservative is, of course, "conserve"...maintain and preserve what we have, and advance forward. We all want to improve things for our kids, and all of our history and advancements have been about that. That is now somehow denigrated by those trying to rip our society apart and relegate it to the dustbin by using the word "privilege" as if it's something negative. I don't buy it. Despite what our opposition may say about us, we believe in diversity in thought and opinion, and sex, and race -- truly a "Big Tent", that accepts all, working towards common goals. Equality in opportunity, not outcome ... fiscal responsibility ... respect for each and every taxpayer's dollar ... caring more about merit, than quotas.
