Canada’s leaders are engaged in a lot of national unity talk these days. In the name of responding to Trump’s tariffs, the federal government is rapidly advancing legislation to build ‘One Canadian Economy’ and working with provinces to identify and fast-track projects in the national interest. Building national unity in the face of new challenges and threats is necessary and important. But it is not easy. So far, Prime Minister Carney and some premiers, including Premier Doug Ford in Ontario and Premier David Eby in British Columbia, are going about it all wrong. The paths they are on will result in more conflict and uncertainty, not unity. Since Confederation, Canadian governments have done too little to uphold Indigenous rights, and this has significantly weakened Canada’s economic prospects.
