Michelle Rempel Garner: Trudeau just plunged Canada further into chaos

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just announced that he has instructed the Liberal Party to start a leadership contest to replace him as party leader and PM. He has also asked Governor General Mary Simon to prorogue (suspend) Parliament until March 24, 2025. As of writing, it’s unclear who is actually in charge of Canada (more on that below). In his announcement speech he tried to brand the chaos he just unleashed as a “reset”, as opposed to it’s reality - an irresponsible, selfish, dumpster fire of instability coming after nine years of ruinous government that will cost Canadians dearly. EDITORIAL – We should get rid of our free-spending governors-general (The Armchair Mayor)

GOVERNOR-GENERAL Mary Simon has been awarded a salary boost of $11,200 for 2024, bringing her annual paycheque to $362,800. She doesn’t need it and, sorry, she doesn’t deserve it. Simon came into office with high hopes as a governor-general who could bring people together, partly because she has indigenous roots. While she’s been unremarkable, she hasn’t been an unfit gov-gen, not like Julie Payette was, for example. But is having a governor-general worth it?
