The Alberta New Democratic Party (NDP) is set to take another step Monday towards replacing outgoing Leader Rachel Notley as membership sales close and the party’s membership list will begin being finalized. The end of the day marks the last chance for candidates to sell memberships. Tuesday will mark the start of the “persuasion period” where the prospective leaders will pitch their platforms to those members, including through three debates in the weeks to come .... Gil McGowan, president of the Alberta Federation of Labour, is running to be leader of the Alberta New Democrats. As of March 7, McGowan was listed on Elections Alberta’s website as a registered leadership contestant for the Alberta NDP. He confirmed the news on social media. McGowan joins four other candidates running to replace Rachel Notley, who is stepping down from the leadership position: Kathleen Ganley, Sarah Hoffman, Rakhi Pancholi and Jodi Stonehouse . . . . . . . . a federal election is creeping closer. The climate radicals, both in the NDP and Liberal caucus, would love to shut the industry out of the national dialogue. Jail and fine the enemy for daring to speak, says Angus, whose riding of Timmins-James Bay has gold mines. These mines have tailings ponds, much like oilsands operations, except that gold won’t run your car. There’s a note of panic in Angus’s private-member’s bill, for good reason. Ottawa’s Liberal-NDP climate agenda is far more challenged, doubted and opposed than it was in the prelude to earlier elections. Any semblance of national NDP unity is cracking wide open . . . .
