“I am a Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship in my own way, free to stand for what I think right, free to oppose what I believe wrong, or free to choose those who shall govern my country. This heritage of freedom I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind.” ~~ John G. Diefenbaker

JOHN D. MacDONALD: “...there are people who try to look as if they are doing a good and thorough job, and then there are the people who actually damn well do it, for its own sake.”

I feel fairly certain that I called out the bcLIBERALS for their unashamed, "Aren't we wonderful?" media releases when they were in power. Now well into the second year of our NDP government's term, it appears while sitting in Opposition, Premier John Horgan learned well from the Liberals.

Leave your ego at the door every morning, and just do some truly great work. Few
things will make you feel better than a job brilliantly done ~~ Robin S. Sharma

Last Friday's media release from the Ministry of Health was headlined, "Taking action to improve the lives of seniors and people who care for them".  It informed us that, "... 88 successful funding applicants will receive more than 1,000 new items...".  Now one would think those would be for specialty equipment that was much needed ... NOT everyday items like beds and mattresses, shower chairs and tubs, mobility equipment ... along with tables and chairs and maybe even music therapy equipment.

Well guess what ... it was mostly for those everyday items, although mixed in with that list were a few items that could possibly be considered specialty.

Ultimately, leadership is not about glorious crowning acts. It's
about keeping your team focused on a goal and motivated to
do their best to achieve it, especially when the stakes are high
and the consequences really matter ~~ Chris Hadfield

Oh, what benevolence and caring they, our BC NDP government, shows.  NO, in actual fact it is NOT benevolence and caring they are showing, nor is it news.

British Columbia's elected leaders and public servants are here to serve the citizens of British Columbia.  Succinct, and to the point, and that's what it says online for our government under the heading of Organizational Structure, for the Government of BC.

A good deed is not a good deed if you brag
about it

I don't know about you, however I believe that we should expect that during their term of office, our elected government will act in our best interests across the entire scope of responsibilities they have been entrusted with.  In other words, they should do their job!  That said, if they do want to proclaim loudly about the actions they have taken on our behalf, they can always use the money their supporters have provided them with, and BUY advertising.

Come election time they can also talk all they want about what they've done, and what they plan to do.  Others, seeking to form government, will similarly inform us about what they would have done, what they will do if elected, and how that will be different.

“Who knows himself a braggart, let him fear this, for it will come to pass
that every braggart shall be found an ass.” ~~ William Shakespeare

And now, one final word on this topic -- one that made me chuckle when I applied it to this discussion.  Psychology Today, in a parenting article from March 2013, stated  that bragging is on par with eating food and having sex, and that it triggered the same sensations in the brain.

What can I possibly say, to follow that, except ...

  1. Alan, why are you quoting a writer of fiction? Did you mean John A. MacDonald?

    1. No, not Sir John A MacDonald, I did indeed mean John D. MacDonald. I quoted him because the words he spoke fit with what my topic was, just as the other quotes did. In that case, fiction or non-fiction is not relevant.

FORSETH -- Focus on the nine things I mentioned. That’s what will allow the Conservative Party to win the next election

IMAGE CREDIT:   Darryl Dyck, the Canadian Press. I thought I had already made up my mind who I would be ranking on my ballot, in the Conservative Party of BC leadership race; now I am not so sure.  That means that, at least for me, and perhaps many others, it’s a good thing voting hasn’t already taken place. There were initially only one or two of the candidates that I thought might be a little too right of centre for my liking, now it seems that list is growing. I consider myself more closely aligned with what used to be called a Progressive Conservative, regardless, I feel more than comfortable within the Conservative Party of BC.  Some, however, in messages to me on my political Facebook page, have been rather, shall we say, a bit mean-spirited in comments they’ve made about my ‘purity’ as a conservative. To tell you the truth, I really don’t care! Some leadership candidates, in comments made online, have also been raising the issue of who is a pure enough conservati...

WARD STAMER -- Those are REAL forestry numbers, not just made-up numbers

The following is a condensed version of remarks Kamloops – North Thompson MLA Ward Stamer’s made, regarding Forestry, in the BC Legislature, on Tuesday afternoon (02/24/2026)   Let’s talk a little bit, when we talk about Budget 2026, about the forest industry, which is near and dear to my heart. Forestry remains one of British Columbia’s foundational industries. It’s a pillar that built this province. Entire communities depend upon it. Interior towns, northern communities, Vancouver Island regions, the Kootenays, the Lower Mainland, with manufacturing facilities in Surrey and Maple Ridge, just to name a few — everywhere in BC is touched by forestry. One word that was not mentioned in Budget 2026 was forestry. That’s a shame, an incredible shame. It wasn’t an oversight – it was intentional. This government has driven forestry into the ground .... INTO THE GROUND! We can talk a little bit about some of the initiatives that this government has brought forth, to try to resurrect ...

Your government has a gambling problem (Troy Media)

Provinces call it “revenue,” but it looks a lot like exploitation of the marginalized The odds of winning Lotto Max are about 1 in 33 million. You’re statistically more likely to be struck by lightning than to win it. But your government is betting that statistics won’t hold you back; they’re counting on it. Across Canada, provincial governments not only regulate gambling, they also maintain a monopoly on lottery and gaming by owning and operating the entire legal market. That means every scratch card is government-issued, gambling odds are government-set, casino ads are government-funded and lottery billboards are government-paid. And these are not incidental government activities. They generate significant revenues that governments have powerful incentives to expand, not constrain. It would be one thing for our governments to encourage us to engage in healthy activities. We can quibble about whether the government should be trying to convince us to be more active or eat more vegetabl...
