Immediate action needed from NDP as B.C. overdose deaths continue to climb

 

Today’s updated illicit drug overdose report, released by the Coroners Service, demonstrates a continued trend of record-breaking overdose deaths in British Columbia – with 2021 trending to be the deadliest year on record in the ongoing tragedy of B.C.’s opioid crisis.

“My condolences go out to the 158 families who mourned the loss of loved ones last month. The recent fifth anniversary of the overdose crisis being declared a public emergency demonstrates just how much work there needs to be done to urgently save lives as overdose deaths continue to rise,” said Trevor Halford, BC Liberal Critic for Mental Health and Addictions.

“More than just supplementing programs to keep people alive, this NDP government needs to take action to help people right now. Instead, the NDP is inexplicably spending less on support this year compared to the next three fiscal years.

Sons, brothers, aunts and so many others across B.C. can’t afford for John Horgan and the NDP to wait any longer. It’s time for this government to ensure they have access to the appropriate care and supports needed today.”


B.C. recorded an average of 5.1 deaths per day in March 2021, on par with the number of deaths documented in February 2021 – continuing the deadly trend of record-breaking months this year.

2025 was a busy first year. As a Caucus, we worked very hard to defeat Bills 14 and 15, legislation which allows the provincial government to move ahead without environmental assessments on renewable projects, and that also allows cabinet to build infrastructure projects without getting approval from local municipal governments. This is not acceptable to your BC Conservative caucus, and we will continue to press this government for open and transparent projects in the future.  Two things we had success in were having the first Private Members bill passed in over 40 years. The first was Jody Toors Prenatal and Post Natal Care bill, and then there was my private members Bill M217 Mandatory Dashcams in commercial vehicles (passed second reading unanimously and is heading to Committee in February). Claims that BC is making progress salvaging wildfire-damaged timber are masking deeper problems in the forest sector, the province’s forestry critic says.
