A working group established by the BC government to engage with First
Nations on reforming the Police Act and bring it into line with the
Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act has been put on
pause, a human rights tribunal heard last week.
Ardys Baker, who leads a team tasked by BC’s Public Safety Ministry to respond to recommendations delivered in 2022 by a special committee on police reform, said she hopes work will soon resume to co-develop new policing legislation with the BC First Nations Justice Council and the First Nations Leadership Council.
But Baker also acknowledged significant hurdles . . .
