British Columbia’s government says it will seize more cash, cars and other property from suspected organized criminal groups under a controversial program that critics say infringes on civil rights. Premier David Eby has tasked his new public safety minister with leading efforts to “target organized criminals in British Columbia by expediting seizing assets.”
A statement from BC’s Ministry of Public Safety and Procurement confirmed that includes “enhancing” the government’s civil forfeiture regime, which allows the province to seize assets through a civil court procedure even if the owner hasn’t been charged with a crime.
