BC Housing Progress Report reveals continued NDP failure on housing

 

As housing prices continue to skyrocket throughout B.C., a new progress report from BC Housing has revealed that after four years in government, the NDP has barely scratched the surface of their housing commitments.

 

 

“The NDP committed to 114,000 units of housing in 10 years, but what we are seeing is nowhere near that — with only 3,246 homes completed, and only 161 of those being new rental housing,” said BC Liberal Housing Critic Ben Stewart.

 

“The NDP likes to talk about its accomplishments on this file, but the facts tell an entirely different story — one of continued incompetence and failure to fulfill the promises made to British Columbians.”

 

 

Despite promising in 2017 to build 114,000 homes over 10 years, the NDP is only 2.8 per cent of the way through their goal. At this rate, it would take well over 100 years for the NDP to fulfill their promise.

 

 

“Right now, we are witnessing the impacts of low housing supply across B.C., with prices increasing and the dream of owning a home becoming further out of reach for so many,” added Stewart.

 

“Instead of making it a priority, the NDP housing plan has all but stalled, with government choosing to blame everyone else for its own failures while ignoring the measures that could actually improve affordability. It’s time for the NDP to build the housing that British Columbians desperately need.”

2025 was a busy first year. As a Caucus, we worked very hard to defeat Bills 14 and 15, legislation which allows the provincial government to move ahead without environmental assessments on renewable projects, and that also allows cabinet to build infrastructure projects without getting approval from local municipal governments. This is not acceptable to your BC Conservative caucus, and we will continue to press this government for open and transparent projects in the future.  Two things we had success in were having the first Private Members bill passed in over 40 years. The first was Jody Toors Prenatal and Post Natal Care bill, and then there was my private members Bill M217 Mandatory Dashcams in commercial vehicles (passed second reading unanimously and is heading to Committee in February).
