TODD STONE: BC actually lost more than 24,000 full-time jobs in August

 


Statistics Canada (StatsCan) numbers for August show a continued trend of private sector and full-time job losses in British Columbia -- with increased reliance on public sector, and part-time, job increases. Last month British Columbia lost 6,000 private sector jobs, while 26,000 private sector jobs have been lost over last 4 months under NDP.

 

Under the NDP, 17,900 more British Columbians now work multiple jobs — an increase of 1,200 people in August alone.

 

The only jobs BC gained in the last month were part-time.

 

In fact, BC actually lost more than 24,000 full-time jobs in August.

 

Sixty-three percent of all jobs added under Premier David Eby’s NDP government, since 2017, have been public sector, taxpayer-funded jobs (+15,300 in BC’s public sector in August alone ... and over 131,800 total since 2017), while private sector employment has only increased by 75,700 jobs since 2017.

 

This is not sustainable.

 

This is what happens without a comprehensive private sector jobs plan. It’s time for the NDP to turn their focus from giving secret $17,000 raises to their own partisan staff, and develop a plan to grow private sector jobs for all British Columbians.

Phase 2 of Burnaby Hospital redevelopment  was green lit to go ahead in September 2023 The NDP spent $45 million on the Burnaby Hospital redevelopment, cancelled the second phase, and now has another $61 million listed for the project in the province’s Public Accounts, with no start date for construction. While Canada posted modest job gains in July, warning lights are still flashing in British Columbia. Youth unemployment remains stubbornly high, leaving too many first-time jobseekers shut out of the workforce.
