Former Victoria police officer John Ducker says it’s hard to imagine how eliminating the second road test for new drivers next year will make roads safer.
“It’s logical in terms of governments trying to find cost savings everywhere they can, but I don’t think it’s a cost that’s worth it in terms of public safety on the road,” said Ducker, who retired as a police officer after 34 years in 2013 and now writes a driving column.
Under the changes, expected to come into effect early in the new year, novice drivers with a two-year clean driving record — 18 months if they’ve attended an ICBC-approved driving school — will not have to take a second road test to get their full Class 5 driver’s licence ...
