“I am a Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship in my own way, free to stand for what I think right, free to oppose what I believe wrong, or free to choose those who shall govern my country. This heritage of freedom I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind.” ~~ John G. Diefenbaker

The Liberals chart a new path in an unstable world (CBC)

Today, after a six-week sprint, the Liberals will crown their next leader — and Canada's next prime minister — at the Rogers Centre in Ottawa.

After many twists and turns, the race has come down to four people: former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney, former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, former House leader Karina Gould and former Liberal MP Frank Baylis.

Whoever wins will have to make big decisions, fast. For starters, U.S. President Donald Trump continues to damage Canada's economy with his tariffs. Meanwhile, Parliament will return from proroguation in just a couple of weeks and opposition parties are clamoring for an election. It'll be out of the frying pan and into the fryer.

CBC News has special coverage of the announcement beginning at 4 p.m. ET. We'll also have a special edition of Minority Report once the winner is declared to bring you up to speed on a consequential day in Canadian politics.

CBC Politics reporter Catharine Tunney has a quick refresher on what's at stake for the Liberals and how the leadership vote actually works.

Read on for that, plus what's coming up today on Rosemary Barton Live, including interviews with Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc and former trade secretary in the United States, Michael Froman.
