Statement from BC Conservative MLAs on Alarming Rise in Intimate Partner Violence

“My heartfelt condolences go out to the victims, families, and communities mourning these devastating losses. Since the end of June, at least five women have been killed and three more seriously injured in incidents of alleged intimate partner violence in British Columbia. These are not isolated tragedies, they are part of a disturbing pattern that cannot be ignored.

We are facing a public safety emergency, especially when it comes to violence against women. According to a report commissioned by the province just last month, nearly 1 in 2 women in B.C. (48%) have experienced intimate partner violence since the age of 15. And 1 in 5 homicides in Canada is linked to intimate partner violence.

British Columbians deserve to feel safe, and that includes safety in their homes and relationships.”

“In the last several weeks, we’ve seen multiple women lose their lives to intimate partner violence, including in my own community. These heartbreaking incidents have shaken families and communities across British Columbia. The pain is real, the fear is real, and the urgency is real.

These tragedies are a powerful reminder that intimate partner violence isn’t a private issue, it’s a public crisis happening in our streets, in our cities, in plain view. We must do more to protect women and ensure survivors are truly supported.”

Delays to the replacement of the Red Bridge? Kamloops North Thompson MLA Ward Stamer says they are, “Totally Unacceptable.”

I think it’s totally unacceptable that on one hand the Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MoTT) is saying they’re going to be responsible for putting together multiple replacement options with public engagement, and then in the same breath they're saying, ‘Oh, and by the way, we're going to start our geotechnical environmental and archaeological site assessments on both sides of the river, possibly beginning this summer.’ According to Stamer, that should already have been done. “Obviously, we're pretty sure it will be in the same location because there's really no other place to put it. So, if you're going to put in a bridge, you think that at least you'd be doing the archaeological assessments first off”, stated Stamer.   “If it's determined it has to be a free-span bridge, and it can't have anything or very minimal impact in the riverbed, they should already be determining that. I thought I had already made up my mind who I would be ranking on my ballot, in the Conservative Party of BC leadership race; now I am not so sure.  That means that, at least for me, and perhaps many others, it’s a good thing voting hasn’t already taken place.
