“I am a Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship in my own way, free to stand for what I think right, free to oppose what I believe wrong, or free to choose those who shall govern my country. This heritage of freedom I pledge to uphold for myself and all mankind.” ~~ John G. Diefenbaker

Conservative Interim Leader Trevor Halford Leads Focused Conservative Caucus, Ready to Take On the NDP Government

The Conservative Caucus of BC is entering a new era of focused, united leadership under Trevor Halford, MLA for Surrey–White Rock, who has stepped into the role of Interim Leader of the Conservative Party of BC and Leader of the Official Opposition.

Halford thanked MLA John Rustad for his tremendous leadership and stewardship of the Conservative Caucus of BC, noting that Rustad took the party from not having elected an MLA since 1975 to coming within one seat of forming government.

“John has worked tirelessly to champion common-sense government and built a movement that we can now take forward to defeat the NDP. Our entire caucus is grateful for the sacrifices he has made for this team and for this province.”

Halford says the Conservative Caucus of BC is focused, disciplined, and ready to provide the stability and accountability that British Columbians desperately need after a fall session defined by government turmoil and worsening crises.

“This government’s agenda was defined by denial, secrecy, and incompetence,” says Leader of the Opposition Trevor Halford. “Every crisis worsened because they refused to act until it was too late.”

With the conclusion of the BC Legislature’s fall sitting yesterday, the Conservative Caucus of BC caucus is identifying the session’s Top 10 major failures by an NDP government that is not only out of its depth, but more frighteningly, without answers for the future.

“This government’s agenda was defined by chaos, secrecy, denial, and incompetence,” says Halford. “Every crisis worsened because they refused to act until it was too late.”

Below is the list based on careful deliberation of the past few months:

  1. Cowichan Court Ruling and Government Mismanagement
A major legal defeat caused by years of neglected oversight, poor decisions, and a government unable to manage its own files.

  2. Mill Closure Crisis in Forestry
The government timber policies have killed economic viability for a host of mills that have already closed, or are about to.

  3. Nutrien Choosing Washington Over BC
Regulatory delays and a poor investment climate drove a global company to bypass BC entirely for a major export terminal.

  4. Record Deficits and Fiscal Mismanagement
Spending spiralled without any credible plan to control costs, grow investment, or stabilize BC’s financial outlook.

  5. Escalating Extortion Crisis in the South Asian Community
Months of threats and violence were met with slow, reactive government responses that failed to protect targeted families and businesses.

  6. ER Closures Across BC
Chronic staffing shortages left multiple communities without emergency care, reflecting deep failures in health-care planning.

  7. Deaths On Surgical and Diagnostic Waitlists
Patients deteriorated and died on waitlists because the government failed to expand capacity or address systemic bottlenecks.

  8. Cockroach Infestations and Unsafe BC Housing Conditions
Infestations and deteriorating buildings revealed long-standing failures in oversight and maintenance of government-run housing.

  9. Crime, Vandalism, and Business Disruption
Rising violence and repeat offending were met with weak policies that left communities and small businesses paying the price.

  10. Killing Bill M219 and Blocking Accountability
The government shut down legislation designed to improve oversight, continuing its pattern of avoiding transparency.

The government shut down legislation designed to improve oversight, continuing its pattern of avoiding transparency.

Halford indicates that this is not just a matter of mismanagement, but rather a complete dereliction of duty in serving the best interests of BC.

“There isn’t a policy area that this government has improved, and in fact, they have destroyed hope in many of the issues that matter most across the province,” adds Halford. “British Columbians deserve a government that can grow the economy, keep communities safe, and fix what’s broken, and this past session shows exactly why people across the province are demanding change.”

“4.5 million hectares of forest lands have burned since 2023, and the best they can do is point to a 90-hectare block being salvaged?” ~~ Ward Stamer, Kamloops-North Thompson MLA

Today, BC NDP forest Minister Ravi Parmar made this pronouncement; ‘Removing red tape has sped up permitting, allowing for more wood to be salvaged, quicker’. 4.5 million hectares of forest lands have burned since 2023, and the best they can do is point to a 90-hectare block?    ~~ BC Conservative Forests Critic Ward Stamer While acknowledging the NDP government has recognized improvements were needed in permitting and accessing burnt fibre in a timely fashion, the reality is, they are barely making a dent in the problem.  This government's recognition that only seven percent of pulp mill fibre came from burnt timber in 2024-25, quite simply put, is a failure. And the recent announcement, just three weeks ago, that the Crofton Pulp Mill would be permanently closing, is proof of that.     Instead of Premier David Eby’s government addressing core issues being faced by British Columbia’s forest industry, they are doing little more than manipulating the facts, ...

A message from BC Conservative MLA Ward Stamer, and the Kamloops – North Thompson Riding Association

2025 was a busy first year. As a Caucus, we worked very hard to defeat Bills 14 and 15, legislation which allows the provincial government to move ahead without environmental assessments on renewable projects, and that also allows cabinet to build infrastructure projects without getting approval from local municipal governments. This is not acceptable to your BC Conservative caucus, and we will continue to press this government for open and transparent projects in the future.  Two things we had success in were having the first Private Members bill passed in over 40 years. The first was Jody Toors Prenatal and Post Natal Care bill, and then there was my private members Bill M217 Mandatory Dashcams in commercial vehicles (passed second reading unanimously and is heading to Committee in February). Regrettably, much of the legislation passed by the government was little more than housekeeping bills, or opportunities to strengthen the ability of Cabinet Ministers to bypass the BC legi...

Wildfire waste plan torched -- Forestry critic Stamer calls BC's wildfire salvage rate 'a failure'

Claims that BC is making progress salvaging wildfire-damaged timber are masking deeper problems in the forest sector, the province’s forestry critic says. Last week, BC’s Ministry of Forests said mills in the province processed more than one million cubic metres of wildfire chips in 2024-25, up from 500,000 cubic metres in 2023 and representing about seven per cent of all processed wood. Kamloops-North Thompson BC Conservative MLA Ward Stamer said those claims of progress ignore the reality that only a fraction of burned timber is being used ... CLICK HERE for the full story
