Statement from Conservative Critic for Municipal Affairs and Local Government Tony Luck on the Metro Vancouver Leadership Crisis

Tony Luck, BC Conservative Critic for Municipal Affairs and Local Government, is raising concerns after yesterday’s revelation that three of Metro Vancouver’s top executives are either terminated, on leave, or facing possible suspension -- and that it shows that it's time for the NDP government to immediately deliver on the structural reform it has promised over the past year.

Said Luck, "With the North Shore Wastewater Treatment Plant now $3 billion over budget, the current leadership chaos now playing out, or the range of questionable financial decisions that have been previously reported on, it is time for legislative change on the Local Government Act to deliver the accountability that taxpayers deserve."

The Conservative Party of BC is specifically calling for the creation of an Auditor General for Local Government to operate under the office of the Auditor General. It is now apparent that direct intervention and oversight at the provincial level is required and long overdue. 

"Residents will no longer tolerate inordinate infrastructure delays, budget scandals, or leadership that is completely out of touch with the communities they are tasked with representing”, Luck concluded

Delays to the replacement of the Red Bridge? Kamloops North Thompson MLA Ward Stamer says they are, “Totally Unacceptable.”

I think it’s totally unacceptable that on one hand the Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MoTT) is saying they’re going to be responsible for putting together multiple replacement options with public engagement, and then in the same breath they're saying, ‘Oh, and by the way, we're going to start our geotechnical environmental and archaeological site assessments on both sides of the river, possibly beginning this summer.’ According to Stamer, that should already have been done. “Obviously, we're pretty sure it will be in the same location because there's really no other place to put it.
